Stephen A. doesn't think Chris Paul's legacy has taken a hit by losing in the Finals | First Take
Stephen A. Smith and Max Kellerman debate whether Chris Paul's legacy has taken a hit following the Milwaukee Bucks winning the franchise's first NBA title in 50 years after defeating the Phoenix Suns 105-98 in Game 6 of the 2021 NBA Finals.

Trade Ben Simmons to the SUNS for CP3 and Crowder. Booker with Ayton, Simmons, Bridges, Johnson and Paul with Embiid, Tobias, Curry and Shake balances out both teams and is the perfect trade. SUNS need more size and 76ers need a PG who can shoot from anywhere. Adding Paul would make 76ers the favorite with Bucks and Nets in the east. Paul’s ppg on the year is identical to Ben’s and his contract should be structured to be the same as Ben’s next year considering his finals production and the outcome

I believe it helps in the sense of PHX wasn’t making the playoffs a couple of seasons prior. Literally the year a 36 year old CP joins the go to the finals.

For those who say CP’s legacy took a hit and/or the Suns should have won because they had home court advantage, did you or anyone else really expect them to be ONE win away from having the best record in the entire league, let alone 2 games away from winning an NBA Championship? NO! This is a testament to how great of a PLAYER and a LEADER CP3 is and how valuable he was to this team. Not even die hard Suns fans thought it was possible. Not from a young team who’s franchise player had never made the playoffs. Not even after going 8-0 in the regular season bubble. People forget that they had the most ground to make up out of all the teams there. They had to win every game just to have a chance to make the playoffs. Not every team was playing with that type of urgency. This was a successful season for them, playing against injuries teams or not, they still weren’t suppose to be there.

Of course it didn’t take a hit, losing in the finals doesn’t hurt your legacy any more so than losing in the first round. Let this just be an example that winning a chip is never easy. Even GS with KD went to G7 vs Houston and had Houston not shot them selves out of the game GSW with KD wouldn’t have even went to the finals… it didn’t hurt his legacy at all

It would be one thing if Chris Paul had multiple 40+ point games and his team lost. Then you could blame the teammates and say his legacy isn’t affected. Instead, in the first 3 losses to the Bucks he turned the ball over 15 times and was a complete no show. His legacy is completely destroyed.

  • czesccotamslychac9

throughout these finals it's pretty obvious the media and nba representing state farm made some sort of deal to create a narrative for Chris Paul - first there was a clear bias towards the suns winning and hyping him up, now that they lost there's a damage control, guy just lost after playing terribly his first and only finals after 16 years of punching people in nuts and pushing them mid air to injure other players yet it's all well and good $$$$$$$$

The stats don’t lie. Whether Giannis was heathy or not when the Suns went up 2-0 very, very few people expected the Bucks to muster the grit and determination they did to smash and grind out the next four. Chris Paul’s career is littered with “failures” and while each in isolation has their own reason taken as a whole the common factor is CP3 himself….maybe he is not the “Point God” people refer him to. He’s certainly not top-5 all-time and I can barely justify top-10. Magic, Oscar, Isaiah, Curry, Logo West all have chips…then there’s J-Kidd, Payton, Nash, Stockton, D-Rose, Westbrook, Harden, Parker who also play the same position have either won MVPs or didn’t take 16-years to get their teams to the Finals. I dunno, CP3 certainly had a squad in Blake Griffin, DA-Jordan etc.

Cp3 legacy def took a hit, if it wasn’t such a free road to the finals I wouldn’t be saying this but the man literally was gifted a road to the finals and loses to the first healthy team. That’s saying something and yes, he had a NICE squad, a superstar in booker, ayton was messing up

CP3 has not performed at his best in the most important games. He did not reach a finals until age 36 and lost in his only finals performance and he under-achieved, He is not "point god" as I would have rather had lots of other point guards over him in the Finals (Cousy, Johnson, Thomas, Parker, Curry)

  • The Don

CP3 was a turnover machine in the finals, thats why they lost . Every time the suns picked up momentum, CP3 has a critical turnover. And when Book was going off , where was he?

  • Pupy Herrera
    Pupy Herrera

His legacy is great player always lose when leading in a series, of course it didn't took a hit

  • Scaramouche

It definitely took a hit because he didn't really make a big impact on this series. I didn't see him step up on big moments. Too many brick shots, turnovers, not consistent. He would play good in the 1st half then disappear on the 2nd half. He only played well on game 1, game 2 he played decent, but the last 4 games he was a now show and just play average. We all know that this is cp3 last chance for a champion run so those number are honestly rubbish on his case. I'm not hating on cp3, but he already have a booker scoring 40 pts a game. He already had his help. He just didn't showed up!

Chris Paul is the same Chris Paul during his entire NBA career.... starts out strong in playoff series and starts to fade in the middle and fade at the end of a playoff series. Led the NBA Finals by 2 games, had 3 bad games in a row and lost 4 straight games against the Milwaukee Bucks. His lack of scoring, many turnovers, bad decision making, making bad passes, mishandling his dribble, getting the ball stolen, lack of veteran leadership, not motivating his teammates etc. His one and only, his last chance in his 16 year NBA career to win a NBA championship ring and he failed to so....if he has played better in those 3 straight losses before Game 6, the Phoenix Suns would be NBA champions...and no playing Game 6. No excuses for Chris Paul be he the starting point guard with the Los Angeles Clippers and The Phoenix Suns.... he failed, did not get the job done. He's not as great (especially when the pressure is on) as many try and make him out to be. Those various but all the same, State Farm commercials? Will have a very different look and tone to them going forward.... Chris Paul is no longer the man and it didn't help him by not shaking the hands of the Bucks players as he just went to the locker room after losing the NBA Finals....not a good look.... or State Farm Insurance just might cancel them altogether.
